I guess we all get anxious from time to time about how well we are ageing. However, reaching a point in life where other people's expectations no longer dictate my actions is truly liberating. It brings a sense of freedom that I wish everyone could experience! While ageing does bring its share of challenges, such as creaky joints and slower recovery from injuries, the multitude of positives far outweigh any negatives. This perspective fills me with joy.

The Joy of Ageing
One of the positives of ageing (yes, there are some), especially now that I'm in my early seventies, is realising that I no longer feel the need to worry about what others think of me. Recognising how much time I've wasted on others' opinions has been incredibly freeing. Don't get me wrong; I care deeply about my family, friends, and a host of essential causes—the environment, animals, and love for those around me.

However, I'm no longer concerned about how others perceive me regarding my appearance, viewpoints, or the way I choose to live. This newfound freedom permeates various aspects of my life, from the significant to the mundane. The days of worrying about what people think about my clothing, hairstyle, or even my size and weight are gone! I've come to understand that how I feel about myself truly matters most.

Positive Ageing Keeps You Young
Whether I choose to dye my hair an outrageous shade of red or wear a specific outfit, it's entirely my decision. It brings me a deep sense of confidence and security. Additionally, I feel more inclined to express my thoughts, especially when I see something I believe is wrong. While I'm not a confrontational person, I no longer shy away from speaking up when I witness bad behaviour or hear others speaking poorly about someone. I particularly despise gossip and bullying, and in that regard, I have always been quite assertive!

Beware the Anti-Ageing Brigade
Anti-ageing messages are everywhere! Since time immemorial, we've heard about "anti-ageing" from skincare companies to fashion houses. They push the narrative that maintaining a youthful appearance is vital, lest we become irrelevant as we get older.

This anti-ageing movement has led some women to explore injectables, fillers, and cosmetic procedures, such as facelifts. While there's nothing inherently wrong with these choices, it's essential to cultivate a positive attitude toward ageing. We should appreciate the beauty that accompanies every stage of life.
Promoting self-acceptance and confidence can reshape the narrative around ageing into one of empowerment rather than fear. Admittedly, we all want to look good, but the truth is that the concept of "never growing old" is an impossible notion. There is no way to stop the process of growing older—it's a fact of life, regardless of the most persuasive marketing campaigns or the most expensive skin cream.

Have Fun and Stay Young
Positive ageing keeps you young. For me, growing older does not mean I no longer add value to society; it simply means that I'm maturing and continue to grow. By adopting a pro-age mindset, I can celebrate each decade without worrying about the passage of time.
Embrace Each Decade
This next phase of my life should be relatively free of anxiety concerning others' opinions. Turning 70 means I finally have more time to pursue the dreams on my bucket list. Maybe I’ll take a trip to Africa to see the big cats, swim with dolphins, or visit the Norwegian Fjords. This bucket list and all my goals have been written down so I can focus on making plans to bring them to fruition.

Take Up New Hobbies and Keep Active
Staying busy and active is essential. It helps you maintain a mentally youthful state. As I reached my mid-fifties, I decided to start my own business. I'm incredibly proud of launching it back in 2008, which has been an enormous success. Being in charge of my creation, from marketing to hands-on web design, has been exciting and liberating!

My growing sense of ease with life has evolved gradually. This change is likely due to the absence of past stressors, such as mortgage payments and demanding 9-5 jobs. Perhaps it's simply because I've reached a point where I no longer juggle so many responsibilities and feel more at peace with myself.

Even as I get older, my curiosity about life, people, and the world around me remains strong. I do what it takes to stay fit, happy, and motivated. Of course, nature reminds me that when it comes to my body and brain, I'm not entirely in charge—injuries take longer to heal. Nonetheless, I'm embracing this decade with gusto, ready to enjoy every moment life has to offer!
